With Judge Benita Brewer
Benita Brewer is a visual artist residing in the suburb of Chicago,
Illinois. She grew up in northern Indiana, earned a Bachelor of
Fine Art from Indiana and a Master of Fine Art from University of
Cincinnati. She worked in the field of graphic design for a number
of years developing video-disks for nursing education, animations of
plant and insect growth cycles for the agricultural market, and
websites for celebrity estates including Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn
Monroe and Malcolm X. She also taught at Indiana University –
Purdue University Fort Wayne as an assistant Professor in visual
design and multimedia for seven years before relocating to Tulsa,
Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma she participated in the
Creative Capital Development Program sponsored by the NEA and
Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and the Oklahoma Arts Leadership
program which focuses on developing projects that assist with
community revitalization, education, and overall quality of
life through art.
In 2015, she moved to Chicago due to job relocation and to be closer
to family. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor
Society, treasurer for the Elmhurst Artists Guild and member of the
Illinois Watercolor Society.
Painting for Benita is a form of storytelling. Her ideas often start
with a personal connection with an object. It is the spark used for
developing a composition that reflects the essence of the memory
but becomes more abstract and universal. The story may be hers but
the viewer interprets the image from his or her own perspective.
Much of her formal art training centered on the graphic arts and
she enjoys paying homage to the typographers and designers that so
greatly influence our view of the world. Many of her paintings
include bits of labels or graphic shapes and signs.
