Cheap Joe’s Art in Education Grant Awards (each to receive $715 in CJAS gift card)
Each year since 2007, the WSNC and Cheap Joe’s have partnered to give awards to the schools in the county where the WSNC holds its annual exhibition. In 2013 the WSNC Board of Directors decided to honor Joe for his many years of support by renaming the “Keep the Arts Alive” award to “Cheap Joe’s Art in Education Award”. The change became effective in 2014. Many thanks to Joe Miller and Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff for their continued support that paves the way for a bright future for young artists in public schools. Without their support, there would be no award for public school art departments.

This year in Wilson County the funds will be distributed among the
middle and high school art programs. Thank you to the local committee
in Wilson for securing the funds to support WSNC’s portion of the
award. Once again, Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff will match these funds.
The four art teachers receiving the awards are Beth Dorenbusch, for
Fike High School; Ashley Shiosaky, for Elm City Middle School;
Charlotte Rouse, for Springfield Middle School; and Matthew Straub,
for Speight Middle School. Each teacher will receive $1,000 to
purchase art supplies for their classes during the school year.
Additionally, one high school teacher has been chosen for the WSNC
Art Teacher Scholarship.
Beth Dorenbusch from Fike High School received a scholarship to
attend Eric Wiegardt’s
workshop in Wilson, and learn about watercolor techniques. Thank
you to Dixie Harrell, who
donated the funds for this year’s scholarship in honor of Sue
Church Grant. It is exciting to see our efforts help to support
arts education in our state’s communities. Both WSNC and Cheap Joe’s
Art Stuff are proud to sponsor this award and we are truly pleased to
help develop the creative minds of our future artists. It is also
important to note that none of this would happen without the relentless
efforts of Janie Johnson, and her dedication to supporting arts in
our public schools.
2013 – Keep the Arts Alive Award – Watauga County Public Schools
Beginning in 2007, the WSNC and Cheap Joe's have partnered to give Keep Arts Alive awards to the schools in the county where the WSNC holds its annual exhibition. This year's exhibition took place in Blowing Rock, making the Watauga County Schools the beneficiary of this year's awards. The first year we were able to award one Middle School a $2,000 grant to help purchase art supplies. This year, Cheap Joe's and the WSNC each donated $2,000 to the award bringing the total award to $4,000. Many thanks go to the local fundraising committee and Watauga County residents Welborn and Patty Alexander for their contribution of the funds for the Watercolor Society's share of the awards.
This year our exhibition was in the hometown of Joe Miller making this a very special event. Watauga County has four teachers that serve 2 schools each in K - 8. The four art teachers receiving the awards are Chad Safferstone, who teaches at Bethel and Hardin Park; Jill Huffman, who teaches at Blowing Rock and Valle Crucis; Rae Filsinger, who teaches at Mabel and Parkway; and Tyler Deal, who teaches at Cove Creek and Green Valley. Each teacher serves two schools and will use the awards to purchase artsupplies for their classes during this school year. Each of these art teachers submitted an application stating what this additional funding would mean to them. It was later learned that many of the schools have not had an art budget for several years and this money will greatly impact the quality of the arts education in Watauga County.
This is an exciting opportunity to support arts education in Watauga County, and both WSNC and Cheap Joe's Art Stuff are proud to sponsor this award and we are truly pleased to help develop the creative minds of our future artists.
This is the final year of the Keep the Arts Alive Award by that name. In recognition of the continued contributions of Joe Miller, the awards will be renamed the Cheap Joe's Art in Education Award in future years. We look forward to the continued partnership between the WSNC and Cheap Joe's Art Stuff.

2010 – Keep the Arts Alive Award – Catawba County Schools
Four years ago the WSNC and Joe Miller of Cheap Joe's Art stuff created an art supply grant award for a school in the County of our annual exhibition to purchase art supplies. Many thanks go to Russell Yerkes and Joe Miller for the brainstorming they did to help foster support for young future artists. In the beginning, we were able to award one Middle School a $1,000 grant to purchase art supplies through Cheap Joe's. The WSNC funds one half of the grant and Joe Miller matches the funds with supplies. I am happy to report that this wonderful program continues to grow through the fundraising efforts of the local committees and the generosity of Cheap Joe's. This year, 2010, the Hickory Museum of Art Guild was instrumental is raising $2,000 to apply to this school grant and Joe Miller graciously matched these funds allowing a Middle School in Catawba County and a High School in Catawba County to each receive a grant of $2,000 to purchase art supplies for their program, bringing the total grants to $4,000.
This is where the unique school systems in Catawba County made it very interesting for the 'Keep the Arts Alive' committee. While we usually have only one school system in the area of our annual exhibition, in Catawba County there are three different school systems: The Hickory City Schools, Catawba County Schools, and Newton-Conover Schools.
After receiving and reading the grants, it was a difficult decision to make. Two Middle Schools came out shining on the top...how could we possibly deprive one school and award another school the entire $2,000 grant? We decided to split the middle school grant and award $1,000 to each of the top entries.
2010 Winners are Robin Deganhardt of Mill Creek Middle School and Steven Hoke of H. M. Arndt Middle School both in the Catawba County School System. As Steven told the attendees at the annual meeting, this award TRIPLES his budget for the year! While that news is depressing, the WSNC should be proud that we are making such a difference in the future of our art students! Steven wrote in his grant that "these additional supplies show students that we are vested in their arts education and that we understand how important the arts are to their overall education". Robin said "these additional art supplies would help the students in their creative art education but would prepare them for their high school art program and enable them more opportunities to exhibit their art work" .
The High School winner for the 'Keep the Arts Alive Award' is Susan Wicklin of Newton-Conover High School.
The impact that the NCHS art program is having on the future of the art is North Carolina is impressive. 100%of the art students in the AP art program received 4's and 5's on the AP exam. The art program at NCHS is a collaborative program and involves the entire school. Susan told us at the meeting that NCHS has over 500 murals that grace the halls of their school. In her grant, Susan wrote that "having supplies available for students to achieve their full potential is paramount to give them the best opportunity for continued growth and development in their fields".
The WSNC would like to thank the Hickory Museum of Art Guild for their fundraising efforts for this project. A very special thank you goes to Joe Miller of Cheap Joe's Art stuff for his generosity and his passion that will 'Keep the Arts Alive' in the state of North Carolina.
2009 – Keep the Arts Alive Award – Brunswick County Public School System
Local art groups from Brunswick County provided the grant money and Cheap Joe matched those funds to provide the 2009 awards.. The WSNC would like to thank the Oak Island Art Guild and the Brunswick Arts Council for providing their contributions to this program. Because of the tremendous support from the community, we are able to extend this project for the 2009 Annual Exhibition by granting a $2,000 credit voucher to a middle school and a $2,000 credit voucher for a high school to acquire art supplies through Cheap Joe's Art Stuff.
After receiving many qualified applications, the "Keep the Arts Alive Award" for middle school goes to Cedar Grove Middle School and the art specialist, Sarah Pape. Cedar Grove is a new school in Brunswick County and they have limited supplies on hand. This additional grant money will help establish this new art program for the students and the art specialist.
The 2009 "Keep the Arts Alive Award" for high school will be awarded to North Brunswick High School and the art specialist, Shane Miller. Shane's excitement at the meeting was contagious to everyone as he accepted his award. We look forward to hearing all about the many projects that are created due to this additional funding for the art program.

2007 - Keep the Art Alive Award
The WSNC and 'Cheap Joe's Art Stuff' are pleased to announce the "Keep the Arts Alive Award"
The WSNC and 'Cheap Joe's Art Stuff' are excited about a new partnership that is dedicated to promoting and supporting the future endeavors of our emerging artists in the schools. This award is a 'matching grant' award that will provide schools the opportunity to purchase art supplies at basically a 50% discount. The WSNC will provide funds and Cheap Joe will match those funds. Our initial goal is for the WSNC to grant $1,000 to the schools and 'Cheap Joe's' will match that dollar amount. What a GREAT adventure for the WSNC to be able to help provide much needed dollars to continue promoting what we love to do best...ART! Our ART future is shining!
The inaugural winner of this award went to Rugby Middle School- Robert Wallace (art teacher) Henderson County.
